Historian Guides

Patrick Schroeder, the Historian of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is scheduled to lead this tour. Legendary battlefield guide, Ed Bearss,  plans to accompany the tour as our special guest.

After his 1864 Overland Campaign stalled at Cold Harbor, General Ulysses S. Grant set his sights on the city of Petersburg. Taking this critical railroad junction, just 24 miles south of Richmond, would cut off vital supply routes to Lee’s Army and the Confederate capital. When initial attempts to capture Petersburg failed, the engagement dissolved into nine months of trench warfare.  When Union troops breached the Confederate line on April 2, 1865, General Robert E. Lee ordered the evacuation of both cities, and began his retreat.  On April 9th, the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox.
