Now in it’s 16th year, CIVIL WAR TOURS offers the very best in battlefield tours. We secure the services of the most prominent historian guides in the field including the legendary Edwin C. Bearss, Tom Clemens, Robert Krick, Gary Gallagher, Jim Ogden, Tim Smith, and Terry Winschel. Walking the hallowed ground of our nation’s most significant battlefields with our experts will provide you with an in-depth understanding of our nation’s most turbulent period.

Our tours spend 2-4 full days touring a battlefield in the company of one or two battlefield experts. We use a portable PA system so you won’t miss a word spoken by our experts. A professional tour manager also accompanies each group to ensure that the tour runs smoothly. We depart the base hotel on a full-size coach (with a restroom) each day at 8:00 am and return to the hotel by 5:30 or 6:00 pm. We provide each participant with a color map book so you can trace troop movements and follow the action of 150 years ago. In addition to lunch each day, we provide coolers of soda and bottled water on the coach; dinners are on your own. We block rooms and secure a group rate at a “base hotel” near the battlefield. However, you may stay wherever you wish; you simply need to be at the base hotel to board the bus each morning. We take pride in our attention to detail in the planning and preparation of each tour; it has always been the hallmark of Civil War Tours. Our goal is to provide you with a comprehensive battlefield experience, in a casual and fun atmosphere.

Owner Marty Gane has over 30 years of experience designing, operating, and escorting study tours to many corners of the world for clients including the Smithsonian Travel Program and National Geographic Expeditions. Since 1994, she has had the privilege of working with legendary historian and battlefield guide Edwin C. Bearss. She has designed and escorted scores of Mr. Bearss’ history tours focusing on the Civil War, American Revolution, Indian Wars, and World War II. In 2006, at Mr. Bearss’ urging, Marty established her own history tour company, South Mountain Expeditions. SME operates 4-5 history tours each year in the U.S. and overseas. Popular tours have included “Attack on Pearl Harbor,” “Normandy to the Rhine River,” “Sherman’s March Through Georgia,” “The Sioux Wars featuring the Battle of Little Bighorn,” and “Greece, featuring the WWII Battle of Crete.” In 2014, Marty acquired Civil War Tours. A native Washingtonian, Marty received a degree in Greek Classics from the University of Virginia.

A history buff, Marty resides in the shadow of South Mountain just down the road from Antietam Battlefield. She has been researching her great-grandfather’s Civil War service for many years. Her great-grandfather, Frank Haskell, fought at First Manassas 4 weeks after mustering in the 5th Maine. Captured, imprisoned, escaped, and recaptured, 11 months later Frank was exchanged and, following a brief rest at home, he re-enlisted in the 17th Maine. With the “Diamond Regiment,” Frank saw action in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse (where he captured Confederate General “Allegheny” Johnson), and Cold Harbor. He was honorably discharged after loosing his right arm at Petersburg. Frank’s older brother William, a Captain in the ill-fated 7th Maine, was mortally wounded at the charge of the Piper Farmhouse in the waning hours of the Battle of Antietam. Marty cherishes every opportunity to walk the hallowed ground on which her ancestors fought and bled.
