Battlefield Guides - Our Vicksburg Dream Team!

Retired National Park Historian, Terry Winschel, will be our battlefield guide for this in-depth, 3-day tour of the Vicksburg Campaign. The legendary Edwin C. Bearss, Chief Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service, will accompany the tour as our special guest. Together, Ed and Terry have served a combined 45 years as park historians at Vicksburg National Military Park.

We will follow the action associated with the Battles of Grand Gulf, Port Gibson, Raymond, and Champion Hill. We will examine the siege operation at Vicksburg, and see the ironclad gunboat U.S.S. Cairo, that was discovered and raised in the 1960s by a team led by Ed Bearss.

Friday - March 29
We’ll spend the day examining the opening phases of the Vicksburg Campaign. In addition, we’ll cover the action at the Battle of Port Gibson and the (May 12, 1863) Battle of Raymond.

Our second day will be devoted to comprehensive tours of the Battle of Champion Hill (May 16) and Big Black River Bridge (May 17), Union victories which set the stage for Grant’s siege of Vicksburg.

The final day will be spent touring the siege line at the Vicksburg National Military Park and a visit to the U.S.S. Cairo, the ironclad gunboat discovered and raised from the Yazoo River by a team led by Ed Bearss. We plan to return to the hotel no later than 5:00 pm.
