Battlefield Guides
Authors and battlefield guides Ed Bearss and Tom Clemens are scheduled to lead this tour.

During the first five and half months of 1862 fortune smiled on the Union armies, but in mid-May the tide changed. Southern armies boldly seized the initiative and carried the war into the Union. Stonewall Jackson drove Union forces from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Robert E. Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia and launched a series of attacks causing McClellan to retreat. Lee then moved north, defeating Pope’s army at the Battle of Second Manassas and crossing the Potomac River into Maryland. The resulting Maryland Campaign (September 4-20, 1862) was one of the major turning points of the war.

Thursday – April 27
7:00 pm Gather for an orientation and lecture by historian Tom Clemens at the Hampton Inn in Hagerstown, MD.

Friday – April 28
Today we begin our examination of Lee’s bold invasion of the North. We will learn how Stonewall Jackson’s troops surrounded, bombarded, and captured the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry. Then we will trace the action of the Union Army’s three-pronged attack at the gaps of South Mountain.

Saturday-Sunday – April 29-30
We will devote two days to the Battle of Antietam (September 17), the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history with about 23,000 casualties. We will also include a tour of the Civil War Medicine Exhibit in the Pry House. The tour ends on Sunday at approximately 4:30 pm.

We have reserved a block of 35 rooms for 3 nights (April 27, 28, & 29) at the Hagerstown Hampton Inn. The group rate is $99 (+tax) per room per night.
